Paul won the 2012/2013 National Blind Tasting championship (spirits division) at the ninth annual Wine Tasting Challenge presented by the Cool Climate Oenology & Viticultural Institute at Brock University. This prestigious blind tasting competition hosted Canada’s top drink writers, professional sommeliers and food and wine industry professionals. Aside from blind tasting and increasing his wine appreciation through WSET certification, he holds certificates as Whisky Ambassador, Bourbon Steward and graduated in whisky programs from Fine Vintage Spirits and Edinburgh Whisky Academy.
He has been involved in the food and drink trade since university. Paul bartended in the officers’ mess at Wolseley Barracks, CFB London, before spending six years in sales and retail management at Chateau des Charmes and Colio Estates wineries. Switching focus, Paul concentrated on the marketing and communication side of the hospitality industry where he was owner and art director in a specialized communications and media relations firm for restaurants, private golf courses and country clubs. Paul was managing editor for a trade beverage publication and the sole restaurant critic for London’s Metro News. In addition to writing drink articles for various online and print publications, Paul’s career has included various marketing roles within corporate wealth management.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western University and attended Centennial College for marketing and business management. Paul prefers Canadian whisky and Speyside single malts, Gewurtztraminer, Cabernet Franc and dark craft ale. He lives in London, Ontario with his family.
